SEC-CDL Environmental Journalist of the Year

Criteria

Description Eligibility* Submissions^
Rewards and recognises professional student or citizen journalists who have established an outstanding body of at least five environmental articles. 1. Open to professional journalists 1. Six feature stories written within the eligible time period. Broadcast pieces must be accompanied by a full transcript in plain text format.
2. Articles must cover an environmental issue in the Asian context 2. Details of any environment-related activities undertaken by journalist in past 3 years (no more than 1 page)
3. Articles must have been published in an officially registered media avenue (print, online or broadcast) 3. Up to three desired supporting documents

* All applicants must be citizens of an Asian country, or must have been residing in an Asian country for at least one year prior to 31 December 2017

^ All submissions should have been published between 1 July 2016 and 31 December 2017.

Description
BALANCED AND FAIR PERSPECTIVE
Even as it conveys a passionate argument for environmental conservation, does the article demonstrate an effort to include perspectives from all parties involved in the issue at hand?
Does the article demonstrate a commitment to presenting all sides of the issue at hand before reaching a particular conclusion?
IMPACT ON SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASING AWARENESS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN THEIR COUNTRY, SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY.
Has the submitted body of work been widely quoted, cited or discussed on other media/publication platforms, reflecting a widespread engagement with the issues they are reporting about?
TRACK RECORD OF ENGAGING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING ON PERSONAL BLOGS OR OTHER PUBLICATIONS AND MEDIA PLATFORMS, OR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN ENVIRONMENTAL VOLUNTEERING ACTIVITIES.
Does the applicant display a credible, long-term passion for engaging with environmental issues through environmental volunteering, or awareness raising initiatives in their personal time?
ABILITY TO REPORT FOR THE LAYMAN’S UNDERSTANDING
Does the body of work reflect a clear and concerted effort to research and engage with high-level socio-political, economic, scientific or technical environmental concepts?
DIVERSITY OF OUTREACH
In his or her body of work, has the journalist made a concerted effort to seek views and opinions from a range of stakeholders?
Has he or she displayed initiative and resourcefulness in reaching out to individuals from various sectors?
ORIGINALITY OF ARGUMENT AND SUBJECT MATTER
In his or her body of work, does the journalist put forth an original argument or unique perspective in his or her article piece?
Does he or she highlight an environmental trend, achievement or problem that has not been covered in the media before?
ELOQUENCE AND FLAIR
Does the journalist’s body of work demonstrate an eloquent writing style with an original, unique ‘voice’?
