With the emergence of rising environment pressures, the need for the adoption of sustainable practices and behaviours within businesses is greater than ever before. Within this trend hotels have an important role to play. Indeed, the tourism business and especially hotels and associated activities have been identified as a major source of environmental pressures.
As a place where many people transit, hotels have a great potential to influence peoples mindset and to showcase good examples of sustainable practices. Furthermore, hotels deal with people from all over the world and with different cultures and backgrounds which makes them an ideal platform for mass communication of sustainability worldwide.
Within this context, the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) feels that there is the need to develop a certification scheme primarily aimed at driving a change towards more sustainable practices and reducing environmental impacts of the hotel industry in Singapore and the region. This scheme aims to address the major environmental impacts of the hotel industry in the form of concise guidelines for best sustainable practices. Hotels which will be able to meet the pass requirements will be awarded the SEC Eco Hotel Label, the first of its kind in Singapore.
Aim of the certification
The aim of this certification scheme is to provide guidelines and a mean of assessment of hotels environmental performances. It is also to reward hotels that have implemented good environmental practices and to encourage the hotel sector to become more environmentally aware. The scheme looks into all aspects of environmental practices (energy, water, waste management as well as guests and community outreach).
The scheme is divided into four levels of achievements depending on how well the hotel performs:
In order to gain the basic eligibility (bronze) requirements, the hotel must already meet stringent requirements much above legal requirements.
