Qualifying Criteria (Part I )
1) Food Packaging, Crockery and Cutlery (GLS-034)

The product must be manufactured with any of the below materials:

Waste Fibre: Any decomposable Fibre used in the product shall not be bleached with chlorine or chlorine compounds (such as hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide). For post-consumer recycled Fibre, this requirement applies to the recycling process and not to the original process of producing the Fibre prior to first use by the consumer. Full documentation of origins of compounds used to manufacture product must be provided upon submission. *

And/or

Sustainable Pulp: The product must be made from sustainable pulp cultivated from sustainable managed non virgin plantations/forestry. The materials used in the production of this product must be certified for sustainability prior to submission to the Green Label. *

All products must qualify with at least one of the two types of materials above in addition to the documentation and testing requirements as detailed in Part II of the criterion below.


2) Products Made From Recycled/Renewable Fibres (Non Food Related)
(GLS-035)

The product must be manufactured with any of the below materials:

Wood / Organic Fibres: All products shall be made of recycled wood and/or organic fibres including intermediate products (e.g. particle boards, pallet and Fibreboard) and finished products (e.g. building material, furniture, handicrafts, and toys).

And/or

Sustainable Pulp: The product must be made from sustainable pulp cultivated from sustainable managed non virgin plantations/forestry. The materials used in the production of this product must be certified for sustainability prior to submission to the Green Label. *


All products must qualify with at least one of the two types of materials above in addition to the documentation and testing requirements as detailed in Part II of the criterion below.

  * Products can be made from a combination of waste Fibre and sustainable pulp. Percentages of each component must be indicated within the Green Label application and the total of both types of materials must add up to at least %75 of the finished product.

 

Testing Requirement (Part II)

Food Packaging, Crockery and Cutlery

  1. Grease Resistance: The package material must not permit grease to penetrate for a minimum of twenty minutes.
  2. Water and Moisture Resistance: The package material must not permit moisture or small amounts of water to penetrate for a minimum of twenty minutes. Please refer to ISO 5634 Paper and Board - Determination of Grease Resistance.
  3. Compression Resistance: The package must have a strength to volume ratio of at least 1.0 g/cm3.
  4. Recycled Content: The package shall have a minimum recycled content of 50% once finished if the product is not manufactured from sustainable pulp.
  5. Volume-to-Weight: The package must have a maximum volume-to-weight ratio of 3.4 cm3 per gram for foamed products and 30.0 cm3 per gram for non-foamed products.
  6. Toxics in Packaging and Inks: Packaging must not contain inks, dyes, stabilizers, or any other additives to which any lead, cadmium, mercury, or hexavalent chromium has been intentionally introduced.

Products Made From Recycled/Renewable Fibres (Non Food Related)

  1. The ratio of recycled wood must be 100% for intermediate products and 90% or above for finished products.
  2. Types, sources and ratios of recycle content shall be entered into the application form in detail.
  3. Packaging must not contain any additives to which any lead, cadmium, mercury, or hexavalent chromium has been intentionally introduced.
  4. All coatings and binding agents must not be formulated or manufactured with halogenated or aromatic solvents or heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium and chromium.
  5. Formaldehyde emissions from finished product must be less than 0.2 mg/L
  6. All documentation required above, including test results, must be submitted together with the Green Label Application.
  7. All test results must pass in order to attain the Green Label certification for your submitted product.
  8. Product or package shall also bear a label reading "Made from Recycled (and/or) Renewable Fibres".

All tests are required and must pass the above requirements prior to submission of any product(s) or product details to the Green Labeling Secretariat.
