Senoko Power Limited – Providing the power to make a difference
As Singapore’s leading power generation and retail company , Senoko Power constantly seeks to optimise the use of limited natural resources, reduce emissions and control pollution at source while producing electricity to meet the country’s needs.
By integrating the Singapore Green Plan 2012 into our business decisions and processes, Senoko Power has achieved a 40 per cent reduction in annual carbon emissions. We were the first power company in the region to develop and implement a repowering programme (which began in 2000) to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, as well as the first power company in Singapore to import clean natural gas for power generation in 1992.
Our recently repowered combined cycle plants (CCPs) have dramatically reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2.5 million tonnes per annum – which is significant compared to the 38 million tonnes of CO2 that Singapore produces in a year – while increasing generation capacity, efficiency and producing competitively priced electricity.
Today, Senoko Power produces approximately 32 per cent of Singapore’s electricity needs, and more than 90 per cent of the electricity we produce comes from cleaner, gas-fired CCP.
In December 2004, Senoko Power commenced operation of a desalination plant capable of producing 2,400 m3 of water per day. The plant enables us to achieve a high degree of self-sufficiency in terms of our industrial water needs and reduces our reliance on Singapore’s scarce water resources.
Through these green programmes and initiatives, we have ensured a reliable supply of competitively-priced electricity with a lower level of greenhouse gas emissions, for higher operational efficiency. With these in place, Senoko Power is proud to be the first power company in Singapore to be awarded the ISO 14001 certification, and the first energy company to receive the Singapore Green Plan 2012 Award.
Senoko Power also pledged $1 million towards its innovative National Weather Study Project (NWSP) in March 2005 to raise awareness among the student population of how the climate and weather patterns can impact our daily lives and the environment. The inaugural NWSP ended early this year and attracted a total of 279 project submissions from 178 participating schools – a participation rate that far exceeded our expectations. The details of the next NWSP have been released to local primary schools, secondary schools and junior colleges, and we hope to secure greater participation for the upcoming competition in 2007.
Senoko Power also continues to build an excellent rapport with its ten adopted neighbourhood schools under the National Environment Agency’s Adopt-A-School programme. We educate students on cleaner power generation technologies, highlight the consequences of wasteful habits and encourage them to practise energy conservation. We also sponsor and assist adopted schools in their environmental projects that will be showcased during Clean & Green Week.
We are delighted to continue as the main sponsor for the annual Singapore Environment Achievement Awards (SEAA). Senoko Power and the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) also promote the SEC-Senoko Power Green Innovations Award to encourage companies to create or improve products that are innovative, practical and environmental-friendly.
The efforts of the SEC in conserving the environment and promoting environmental awareness through the SEAA are laudable. Given the importance of environmental health in a small country like Singapore, it is vital that there are awards that formally recognise organisations which have made outstanding contributions to protecting and improving the environment.
We are delighted to partner with the SEC in our drive to create an improved environment for tomorrow’s generation and to provide the power to make a difference. |
